A quick overview of Hosting

Hosting is typically a mis-understood and therefor under-valued service by many potential would-be website owners.

Never seeing behind the scenes and with limited experience, new comers to the web development arena, understandably can't see the difference between good hosting and inadequate hosting.

Depending on whether or not a website and email services are deemed as mission critical to the success of your business will fundamentally underpin your choice of hosting.

With websites if your hosting solution fails then there is no website - it is as simple as that.

Dusza have a range of hosting packages from as little as £99+vat per annum. This is a fully managed service so if you don't have the time nor inclination to manage your hosting our solutions are affordable so you don't have to.

If you are an individual or a small business website owner, perhaps your website does not directly impact your revenue or potentially it is only part of your revenue generation model.

If you can afford to risk a few days a year of interrupted service then a less robust Hosting solution can be appropriate to your budget.

Another factor to consider is the cost of Hosting. Some clients say "My website can not afford any downtime - ever." To get a completely fail-safe Hosting solution you need to consider all eventualities including the failure of hardware, software, firmware, power, internet connection, database corruption, spam attacks, hacker attacks to name just a few topics.

A Host server is merely a computer connected to the internet (and hopefully always on and connected!). So if any
of the following hardware or software fails then any websites hosted by it will also fail: Computer component failures such as a processing unit failing, Hard drive failure, Network switch failure, Internet connection disruption, Power connection disruption. Theses are the most common faults to make a bring down a website.

To overcome any hardware failure you need to have at least two servers. If one fails for any reason then the second will continue to host your website. When hosting two servers you have to consider what happens after one server fails. If your website is gathering a lot of data from visitors; how does that get transferred over to the failed server when it gos back online? This is the job of your web developer(s) to advise on.

To overcome any power or internet failures you can not rely on just a single power connection for either. For power redundancy most good hosting providers have at-least 2 different power lines coming into the Server House from two separate Sub-stations as well as a on-site generator with
fuel supply contracts in place should a complete power failure occur for any sustained period.

For Internet redundancy you naturally need at least two internet connections from two different providers.

Of course all this redundancy is of no consequence if the Server House suffers a Fire that destroys the Servers or even a terrorist attack. These two last incidents are of course extremely unlikely but if your website has to be resilliant and online 24/7/365 no matter what, you simply ahve to make certain you have considered the what ifs.
The only way to overcome these disasters is to have a duplicate Server setup in a different geographical location to step in when the other Server House fails.

Hosting redundancy always comes at a price because you are basically duplicating your requirements every time you add another area of redundancy.
